Forefront of Technology

Choice Hotels launches the first iPhone app by a hotel chain

by Brian Osborne posted on April 2, 2009 4:10 pm

Choice Hotels has announced the very first global application for the iPhone from a hotel company. The Choice Hotels Locator iPhone application will be available to iPhone and iPod touch owners free of charge from the iTunes Store. The application utilizes GPS capabilities within the iPhone to assist Choice Hotels customers.
Using the application customers can find and book Choice Hotels worldwide. Over 5800 hotel locations are available through the new iPhone application. GPS functionality within the application includes the ability to find hotels based on location, get directions and even look at street view images. Other hotel images are accessible through the application as well.

Choice Hotels must know that one way to get customers to book their rooms is to place information concerning over 5800 hotels in the palm of their hands. That’s really what is great about a free iPhone application. People will download it because it’s free and the organization sponsoring the app may see more customer business as a result of its use.

All Hail the Cherry Blossoms

The blooming of the cherry trees around the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C. has come to symbolize the natural beauty of our nation's capital city. Hundreds of thousands of visitors from across the nation and around the world come to the Nations Capital to witness the spectacle, hoping that the trees will be at the peak of bloom for the Cherry Blossom Festival, Washington, D.C.'s rite of spring.

The plantings of cherry trees originated in 1912 as gift of friendship to the United States from the people of Japan. In Japan the flowering cherry tree or "Sakura", as it is called by the Japanese people, is an exalted flowering plant. The beauty of the cherry blossom is a potent symbol equated with the evanescence of human life and epitomizes the transformation of Japanese Culture throughout the ages.

Better plan your visit now! For more information, including expected peak bloom times, take a look at the following websites:http://nationalcherryblossomfestival.org/cms/index.php?id=390 , and http://dc.about.com/cs/familyactivities/a/CherryBlossom.htm . We love AAA!

How many times have you been stranded on the side of the road, frantically searching for your AAA card? And then breathed a sigh of relief when the experience was all over? Even in college, AAA was there for you. I will never live some of those stories down...like the one time when I had to get my car towed all the way back to my parents' house, thinking something was really wrong. Lo and behold, I was OUT OF GAS. Talk about embarressing...and my family still laughs about it to this day!

Don't forget that AAA nowadays is about so much more than "emergency roadside assistance". There's car insurance, maps, magazines, ratings and, of course, AAA discounts! We here at the Comfort Inn Capital Beltway proudly accept the AAA card. In fact, we are AAA Diamond rated. Remember to ask for your AAA discount when you make your reservations, and show us your card at check in. Go to www.aaamidatlantic.com to discover more about AAA and what it can do for you.

TLC Training at Choice Headquarters

All week this week our GM was at her Total Lodging by Choice certification class, which was held at Choice Headquarters in Silver Spring (see photo on left). She, along with 55 other people, spent Monday through Friday in a classroom setting listening to presentations from all the good folks at Choice, and doing Case Studies/Teachbacks/Presentations. Though it was difficult to go from focusing on 20 different things at once to just a few things at once, the break was welcomed and "the old dog" did manage to learn a few "new tricks." She was able to say hello to a few friends at the Headquarters, put faces with names, and make connections with other owners and GM's from across the country and across the brands.

One guilty pleasure, though - 2 days during training lunch was catered by Karla, who lost the title of Top Chef this week to Josiah on Bravo. The first time our GM saw her she was too star struck to do anything other than close her jaw, but the second time she recovered enough to have a conversation with her. That's probably as close to famous as she's going to get, but it was still neat. Oh - and, of course, lunch was excellent! See how Karla lost at http://www.bravotv.com/ .

At the end of the class everyone received their certificates and rushed out the doors to get back to their properties. We may not be together anymore, but we certainly leraned a lot from each other and the experience will not be forgotten (especially the part where we learned how we can double our money by using magic)!

Fun at the Caps Game last night

Did Donna have fun last night or what? Our Director of Sales took a few of her new friends to the Capitals game last night at the Verizon Center...and then they made more friends!

Check out Slapshot the Mascot's story at http://capitals.nhl.com/team/app/?service=page&page=NHLPage&id=8625 . Donna's always looking to build fun and lasting relationships with her clients, and came to work Friday a little tired but very excited and shared all the stories with her boss. How many hot dogs did you all eat again? :)

Does Your Hotel Clean With "Green" Products?

Ours does! We are proud to be partners with Proctor and Gamble Professional Services, and LOVE that all of the products we use come with their "green guarantee"! Not only has every product been assessed for safety before it reaches us, they even test the chemicals for things like short and long term toxicity, skin and eye irritation, skin allergies, aquatic toxicity, and biodegradability. Of course, their products are concentrated, which means less packaging is used to get them to us. For more information, go to www.greenguarantee.com . Or, if you want to ask someone here about what it's like to use products like Spic and Span, Tide, Mr. Clean, and Comet every day, just email Laura Zambrano, our Executive Housekeeper, at lzambrano@pmhs.com .

Do you know what your hotel is using to clean it's rooms? Shouldn't you?

What's going On With the New Old Hotel?

In 2009, the Comfort Inn/Capital Beltway (formerly the Fairfield Inn Capital Beltway) will be a preferred select service hotel in suburban Maryland serving the needs of travelers in the economy and mid price segments, as well as a preferred provider of rooms to tour groups traveling to the Washington DC and Baltimore area.

Positioned just 10 miles outside Washington, DC and 30 miles south of Baltimore, we are an affordable price alternative to those traveling to the DC and Baltimore metro areas that are seeking quieter, safer and more affordable lodging as compared to downtown hotels.
Our breakfast room, which hosts a complimentary deluxe continental breakfast each morning, provides complimentary coffee and extra work space during the day for anyone. Guests can also relax in our lobby area, which features complimentary wireless internet access in front of a cozy fireplace and flat panel LCD TV.

Recreational areas include a spacious outdoor swimming pool and whirlpool as well as a fitness center equipped with treadmills, stair climber, elliptical, and exercise cycle.

With 166 standard guest rooms and 3 deluxe suites, our guests can choose from a variety of bed types including one king bed, one queen bed, two queen beds or two room suites with sofa beds or conference table. Our hotel is 100% smoke free, 100% pet friendly, and each room is equipped with free high speed internet access and pay per view movie service. A varied selection of room inventory along with 7 function rooms totaling over 5,000 square feet makes the Comfort Inn an ideal location for large corporate or social groups. Our 130 seat amphitheater makes us an ideal location for teams or classes that would like to capitalize on group activities in a large theater setting.

Set in the middle of a shopping center that is flanked on either side by offices and across the street from a movie theater, the hotel property’s ample and complimentary parking as well as its easy access to 95 and 495 make it an ideal location for any traveler who prioritizes an easy commute. Multi-lingual staff members make any interaction easy and comfortable, from the Sales process right up until checkout.

Tour Groups, SMERF groups, and Sports Teams may find our amphitheater beneficial for meetings. Construction crews, traveling professionals, and the last minute “road trip” consumer will appreciate our easy highway access and complimentary breakfast. We are now the closest Choice product to Choice Hotel headquarters, located 6.6 miles away.
